a collaboration with the tulane school of architecture and louvis services.
Unlike its predecessor, this project was developed with a defined client, program, and site from the outset. Designed as a pair of one-bedroom units, the duplex serves as transitional housing for individuals exiting homelessness. It continues the partnership with Louvis Services, focusing this time on permanence, constructibility, and livability rather than portability.
The duplex model prioritizes simplicity and durability through the use of conventional wood framing, corrugated metal cladding, and off-the-shelf aluminum profiles. These choices support both affordability and long-term resilience. With on-site construction in mind, the project was carefully detailed to allow for straightforward, replicable assembly by small teams.
Each unit includes a screened front porch, offering a protected outdoor space that supports the therapeutic goals of transitional living. These porches, along with the rainwater collection system and subtle variations in material expression, provide moments of dignity and identity within the otherwise standardized structure.
